Professor Josephson’s academic career has included discovering reaction mechanisms in biomass catalysis, predicting multicomponent liquid-phase adsorption in nanoporous materials, and developing and applying interpretable machine learning techniques for chemistry. He is passionate about sustainability, equity, and science communication. During his downtime, he loves learning new things, thinking about deep topics (like science and philosophy), and playing the piano (his favorite pianist being Franz Liszt).
Ejike David Ugwuanyi received his M.S in Chemical Engineering from Nigeria at Ahmadu Bello University where he worked on the Production of Antimicrobial Soap from a blend of Moringa Oleifera and Castor oil and also determined the activity of the soap against some selected pathogens such as E.coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of Maryland Baltimore County with a research focus on formalizing chemical theories using the Lean theorem prover. Other areas of interest include using HPC to advance energy equity and environmental sustainability. In his free time, he enjoys watching football and interacting with folks.
Faezeh’s journey started in chemical engineering, where she earned her bachelor’s degree, and later she added an MBA to her toolkit. Now, as a Ph.D. student in Chemical Engineering, she’s exploring a question that fascinates her - what if the way we draw analogies could help us predict the properties of materials? She loves mixing hands-on engineering experience with data-driven tools, always looking for new ways to connect ideas that don’t usually meet. For her, the most exciting breakthroughs come from thinking outside the box. Outside of research, she enjoys being in nature; hiking, walking by the water, or just getting some fresh air. She also loves reading, especially books on psychology and philosophy.
Samiha received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 2017. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. with a research focus on simulation methods for competitive adsorption in porous materials using molecular modeling and machine learning. In her free time, she enjoys exploring nature and listening to spiritual podcasts.
Alexander Haibel is a 2025 graduate from UMBC (Biochemistry major, Math minor) who is staying on as he finishes up projects and applies for graduate school in the coming cycle. He currently works at the intersection of AI and computational chemistry, but is always happy to go down a new rabbithole. Outside of the lab, he is a four-time Brazilian national champion and World Championship participant in League of Legends, and an AEC conference champion / career MVP in swimming.
Colin is majoring in chemical engineering student at UMBC. He values opportunities to work with others and learn new ideas. In his free time, he enjoys exercising, playing chess, and reading science news.
Fariha is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. She values the opportunity to meet people with similar interests or those with different perspectives. She finds meeting new people and being expose to diverse things academically is the way to finding what we are passionate about. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, TV shows (mostly anime) or drawing.
Muhammad is majoring in Chemical Engineering on the Bioengineering track with a minor in Computer Science. He is particularly interested in the intersection of chemical engineering and computational methods, especially in areas like process and bioengineering. In his free time, he enjoys programming, playing and talking about cricket, and learning about history. A fun fact about him is that he was born and raised in Dubai.
Oscar is majoring in Computer Sciene and Mathematics. He joined the lab to help in Lean Theorem proving in August 2023. He enjoys reading, playing sports in spare time and also working towards his private pilote license.
Shashane is pursuing a degree in chemical engineering on the bio track. Her passion for problem-solving serves as her motivation to learn more each day. She engages in activities such as painting, gaming, and listening to music during her spare time.
